High School Humanities
Instructor: Ms. Habecker
The high school humanities expedition this year is focused on culture and conflict in world religions, studying various historical and current conflicts involving religions.  They will also study the geography and culture associated with regions where particular religions are prominent.

Big Ideas
  • While there are many differences, there are many underlying similarities and common elements in all religions.
  • Culture and religion have a mutual influence on each other: culture impacts the way religion is practiced in many areas, and religious values and practices often influence the culture of a region.
  • Religion, culture, and personal background combine to form each person's worldview.
  • Religious beliefs and practices influence daily actions and decisions for people worldwide.
  • Throughout history, religions have been involved in political, ideological, and geographical conflict, even though many spring from the same roots.
  • Religious and political authority are often connected; throughout history, leaders have exploited religious belief to attain their goals.

Humanities At Work
On Tuesday, November 29, the high school participated in fieldwork at the Har Shalom Synagogue in Durango, where they learned background information about the history of Judaism.

On December 13, the high school humanities class hosted a mock UN peace summit on the Israel-Palestine conflict.  They have been working in groups to research the conflict for several weeks.  Each group was assigned a perspective to research. They debated from their country’s perspective and were able to create a plan for peace.
